Nosebleed in Kids

Nose bleeding in children is a scary sight for parents. Especially in summers, nasal cavity gets dry leading to nose picking in kids, resulting in nose bleeds. Try to calm and reassure your child, because crying will make the bleeding worse, then follow these first aid instructions. As parents/ teachers you can take few important steps on this situation.

Do’s

  • Firstly, the caregiver should RELAX. there’s no need to panic on seeing a nose bleed.
  • Make the child sit upright and make the Head and body to lean SLIGHTLY FORWARD- by doing this you are preventing the blood getting down the throat.
  • Use your thumb and index finger to pinch the SOFT PART of the nose. (Just below the bony part) continuously for TEN MINUTES. Older children can be asked to pinch the nose by themselves.
  • Ask the child to breathe through the MOUTH.
  • If an ice pack is available nearby, it can be applied over the bridge of the nose.

Don’ts

  • Don’t make the child lay flat.
  • Don’t put the head in between legs
  • Child should not blow the nose or rub his nose
  • After the bleed is over, the child should not strain or lift heavy weights

“Even if it’s your child’s first nasal bleed, always get evaluated by a doctor
