The Fertility Diet: A Holistic Approach to Enhancing Conception – Part1

கருவுறுதலை அதிகரிக்க எடுத்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய முக்கிய உணவுகள்- ஒரு முழுமையான அணுகுமுறை – முதல் பகுதி

Regardless of the severity of a fertility issue, 99% of couples ask us, “Doctor, what should we eat and avoid while trying to conceive?” This is due to the long-standing Tamil tradition of “UNAVE MARUNDHU,” which emphasizes the importance of food in shaping both our physical and mental well-being. It is true that we are what we consume, and this principle holds especially true when it comes to fertility. As such, we are happy to provide guidance on the best foods to eat and those to avoid optimizing your chances of conceiving.

The allopathic branch of medicine, while evidence-based, often overlooks the importance of lifestyle and dietary habits. However, a lifestyle medicine approach to population care has the potential to effectively address the decades-long rise in chronic conditions and their associated costs. This is particularly important when it comes to conditions such as infertility, which require a multidisciplinary approach involving professionals from various fields, including psychologists, nutritionists, and support group networks. By taking a comprehensive approach to healthcare, we can improve outcomes and enhance the overall well-being of patients.

What is the best diet for fertility?

As a professional in the field, I often advise couples to adopt the mindset of “being local while thinking global.” It’s easy to get caught up in the search for the latest and greatest, but we must not forget that our ancestors were one of the most advanced and intelligent races, with a remarkable fertility rate. To ensure sustainability, I recommend a diet that is closely aligned with our traditions and utilizes seasonal produce. By doing so, we can honor our heritage while also promoting a healthier and more sustainable future.

Complex carbohydrates.

To improve your diet and maintain healthy blood sugar levels, it’s important to incorporate foods that prevent sharp spikes in sugar. One way to do this is by replacing polished white rice with healthier alternatives like brown rice, “Kaikuthal Arisi”, and “Kavuni Arisi”. These grains contain more fiber and Niacin, which can help regulate blood sugar levels.

Another great option is millet, which is one of the oldest cultivated grains in the world and is enjoyed by many cultures. Millet has gained popularity in recent years due to its numerous health benefits. The best part about millet is that it comes in a variety of types and can be easily prepared, so you’ll never get bored of eating it.

It’s important to note that you don’t have to completely give up rice to incorporate millet into your diet. Simply replace rice with millet 3-4 times a week to reap the benefits of both grains. Remember, rice is still a healthy option and can be a part of your daily meals.

To further improve your diet, it’s best to avoid aerated drinks, soda, cola, and carbonated beverages. These drinks are often high in sugar and can cause spikes in blood sugar levels. Instead, opt for water, herbal tea, or other low-sugar beverages to stay hydrated and healthy.

Fat is necessary- how to choose?

Adequate fat intake is crucial to produce hormones that are essential for fertility. Monounsaturated fats play a vital role in maintaining a healthy hormone balance. These healthy fats can be found in coconut oil, olive oil, and “Nalla Ennai” (Gingelly oil). Additionally, Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fats that are abundant in seeds such as flax, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. To achieve a good balance of these fats, I recommend seed cycling.

On the other hand, it is important to eliminate trans fats from your diet. These unhealthy fats can be found in foods such as mayonnaise, fried foods, Vadais, Bajjis, and dalda. Not only do they offer no health benefits, but they can also cause ovulatory dysfunction and poor hormone balance.

By incorporating healthy fats into your diet and eliminating trans fats, you can improve your hormone balance and increase your chances of fertility. So, make sure to choose your Fats wisely and take care of your body.
